Gutter to Downpipes – Swan Neck

The swan neck is a crucial component in gutter systems. It connects the horizontal gutter section to the vertical downpipe.  In many house designs this is within the eaves and not visible from the outside.  The swan neck design creates a gradual transition from the gutter to the downpipe, but is rather shallow which can cause issues.  If there is any debris in the gutters, this may cause blockages which leads to overflows.  Please be sure to have a look at our gutter maintenance tips.

Gutters and downpipes are metal products so will rust when water sits in them over time.  Rust of course eventually becomes a hole, and then water can escape, causing damage to the eaves and surrounding area.  This can look like bubbling or peeling paint, signs of mould growth or water stains.

In this video, Andrew explains some of the reasons we have issues in these areas of your house drainage system.

If you have a similar problem in a corner of your eaves, but not in the vicinity of a downpipe, perhaps it is purely from water ponding in the gutters themselves.
